Two veteran NASA missions are providing new details about icy, ocean-bearing moons of Jupiter and Saturn, further heightening the scientific interest of these and other "ocean worlds" in our solar system and beyond. The findings are presented in papers published Thursday by researchers with NASA's Cassini mission to Saturn and Hubble Space Telescope. This artist's rendering shows Cassini diving through the Enceladus plume in 2015.

A very rare astronomical phenomenon has been in the headlines a lot recently, and for good reason. It will be hundreds of years until we can see Jupiter and Saturn this close to one another again. However, there are some even more "truly strange and very rare phenomena" that can currently be observed in our night sky. Jupiter is the fifth planet from our sun and the largest planet in the solar system.
On Monday evening, Jupiter and Saturn appeared closer to each other than they have for hundreds of years, in what has become known as the Great Conjunction. Their proximity is the view from Earth. In space, the planets are hundreds of millions of miles apart. Jupiter and Saturn's positions in the sky align "about once every 20 years," according to NASA, though almost never this closely.
